Mr. Smith was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1952, served as the chairperson of the board from 1956 until 1973 and was named trustee emeritus in 1977.
The Thompson family has sent five women to Agnes Scott, including Julia's sister, Anne Thompson Rose, and three nieces, Lucy A. Rose, Nancy Rose Vosler and Peggy Rose Day. The Smith's son, John E. Smith II, is a trustee emeritus of the college.
